Considering using Upwork's 'Talent Scout' feature as a client. Is it worth the extra cost compared to just posting a job and sifting through proposals myself?

H HRManager 7 hours ago ✓ Best Answer
As a client, I used Talent Scout for a critical project and found it saved a ton of time. The quality of candidates they send is usually much higher, and they're already vetted. Less noise, more qualified people. Worth it for high-stakes roles.

C ClientBoss 6 hours ago
That's good to hear. I'm tired of irrelevant proposals.
5
P ProjectLead 6 hours ago
Does it cost more than the regular fees?
8
H HRManager 6 hours ago
Exactly. They do the initial filtering for you, so you only see top-tier talent.

S StartupGuy 5 hours ago
It depends on how much your time is worth. If you have the bandwidth to review dozens of proposals, maybe not. But if you want to quickly hire someone reliable without the hassle, it's a solid option. It's an additional service, so yeah, extra cost.

P ProjectLead 4 hours ago
Could be. I'll check the pricing details.

Time is definitely money for me. Thanks for the input.

Noticed a lot of clients posting 'fixed price' jobs but then trying to push for hourly work during interviews. Is this common or am I just getting unlucky?

C CodeMaster 3 days ago ✓ Best Answer
Super common, especially for development work. They post fixed price to get cheaper bids, then once you're talking, they realize the scope is bigger or they just prefer the flexibility of hourly. Always clarify the scope and payment terms BEFORE starting.

D DevGuy77 3 days ago
It's so annoying. Should I just refuse hourly then?
0
C CodeMaster 3 days ago
Depends on your preference. If you prefer fixed, stick to it and clearly define deliverables. If you're open to hourly, make sure the rate is good and the client has a verified payment method.

D DevGuy77 3 days ago
Good point. I need to be firmer.

T TechieGirl 3 days ago
Happened to me last week. I just told them my hourly rate and if they weren't comfortable, we could part ways. Some clients are just trying to get more for less.

T TechieGirl 3 days ago
Don't undervalue yourself!

That's a good approach. I usually just agree out of desperation.

My client tried to pay me outside of Upwork and now my account is suspended. Any chance of getting it back? This is my main income source.

U UpworkVet 5 days ago ✓ Best Answer
Oh man, that's tough. Upwork is super strict about circumventing fees. They consider it a serious violation of their Terms of Service. Usually, a suspension for that is pretty permanent, but you can try appealing. Be prepared for a long shot though.

L LostFreelancer 5 days ago
Yeah, I was honest. Just hoping for a miracle.
4
U UpworkVet 5 days ago
Honestly, total honesty and showing you understand why it's a violation. No excuses. But still, it's an uphill battle.
4
L LostFreelancer 5 days ago
I sent an appeal already. Any specific things I should mention?

S SmartCookie 5 days ago
Yeah, it's in the terms. They track messages for that kind of stuff. It's a risk everyone takes if they try to go off-platform. Hope it works out but don't hold your breath.

I know, I messed up.

Curious too if they ever reinstate people for this.

Anyone tried using the Upwork Academy courses? Wondering if they're actually helpful for improving proposals or just basic stuff.

S SaraJ 1 week ago ✓ Best Answer
I did the 'Winning Proposals' course. It had some decent tips on structuring and tailoring proposals, especially for beginners. Nothing groundbreaking if you're experienced, but good for refreshing basics and understanding client psychology on the platform.
16
S SaraJ 1 week ago
Yeah, it helped me think about the client's pain points more. Worth a look, it's free anyway.
1
C ContentGuy 1 week ago
True, can't hurt to check it out.
8
C ContentGuy 1 week ago
Okay, so good for a refresh then. I feel like my proposals sometimes miss the mark.

I looked at a couple of the 'Getting Started' guides. Found them pretty basic. If you've been on Upwork for a while, probably not much new info. But for new freelancers, it's a good intro.

C ContentGuy 1 week ago
Hmm, I'm not totally new but feel like I could optimize more. Thanks for the heads up.

Seeing a lot more 'Talent Scout' invitations lately. Anyone actually landed a good gig through it? Or is it just another way to spend Connects?

P PoojaR 2 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
I got a really solid long-term content writing project through Talent Scout about a month ago. It felt more curated, less like a shot in the dark than regular proposals. Didn't have to spend Connects either for the initial invite.
11
N NikhilS 2 weeks ago
Got it. That makes more sense.
1
P PoojaR 2 weeks ago
Nope, it's like they pre-screen you. You only use Connects if you respond to a direct job post they match you with.
8
N NikhilS 2 weeks ago
Oh, so no Connects for the invite? That's interesting.
5
R RaviC 2 weeks ago
I've had a couple of invites, but they didn't really fit my skillset after looking closer. Maybe it's hit or miss depending on your niche. I ignored them.
10
R RaviC 2 weeks ago
I think it's based on your profile keywords and past job history. But not always perfect.
8
N NikhilS 2 weeks ago
Yeah, I've seen some irrelevant ones too. How do they match you anyway?
